Werner Oechslin is a widely travelled personality and dedicated collector of knowledge. Having studied archeology, mathematics, history, philosophy in Zurich and Rome, he also taught and lectured at institutions around the world like the MIT in Cambridge, Mass., the FU Berlin and Harvard Graduate School. Until 2006 he was head of the Institute of the History and Theory of Architecture at the ETH Zurich. Since 2015 Oechslin is a speaker at the Tongji University in Shanghai.

The SCAA was invited to a lecture about „Forms of Knowledge“ and a guided tour in the Werner Oechslin Library. While sitting in the library hall, where bookshelves reach up to the grey concrete ceiling with its shiny inscriptions, the listeners were drawn into the fascination of books – the essential instruments of creating order in the chaos of knowledge.
瑞士中国建筑师和艺术家协会SCAA受邀参加Werner Oechslin的讲座“知识的形式”,并在他的带领下参观了图书馆。坐在大厅,周边通高的书架从地面直达灰色混凝土天花,天花的梁上还刻着闪亮的铭文,听众的吸引力逐渐引至图书馆的主角:书 – 在知识海洋中创造秩序的基本工具。
Oechslin stated that now, being in the digital age, humans still make the mistake of trying to substitute old knowledge tools with new ones. It would be far wiser to integrate new tools and evaluate their potential for contribution. Most importantly we need to understand that we are facing a huge gap between the capacity of producing information and storing the same. Just recently the National Library of Washington gave up on documenting all Twitter texts by the current president. The skill of making a selection needs to be learned and applied again. In old times librarians mastered a combination of having knowledge and making decisions. Be it J.J. Winckelmann, G.E. Lessing or G.W. Leibniz, all were librarians before becoming the influential characters we know of today.

History shows that humans have an inherent necessity and ability to create order. Just like the schemes by German Jesuit Athanasius Kirchner, the diagrams created by Majorcan philosopher Raymundus Lullus demonstrate the urge to handle complex issues of the world by creating visual systems and organizing them in books – as forms of knowledge. Many of those have a great beauty in themselves and look like artworks. In a library, books can be viewed and importantly also be touched. By this their content becomes literally comprehensible. Moreover, the library creates a network where all books are connected to each other in a spatial and intellectual context.

And yet there are limits to all the efforts of knowledge mastery. In 1921 Albert Einstein held a lecture called „Geometry and Experience“. He projected the system of mathematics onto reality and concluded that some things are just enigmas – riddles that even he could not solve.

About the library:
The Camino de Santiago in Switzerland leads pilgrims through the pretty town of Einsiedeln and its impressive abbey. It is not by chance that the Werner Oechslin Library is located right on the path. It houses a large collection of not only architectural but also scientific and philosophical books – many of them first editions. It serves as a research center and is also a place for contemplation with a special spirit of discovery – over ground and underground: The whole library complex is a world in itself. Over 60.000 publications are stored in it, with pictures, inscriptions and statues adding to the experience. The modern geometric building by architect Mario Botta is connected to the house of Werner Oechslin by a sequence of subterranean rooms with accentuated incidences of daylight. Inside the enchanting Wunderkammer you can even find a secret stairway hidden behind a bookshelf – leading back to the upper world.
