Leben und Bauen im ländlichen Südwestchina

Max Bill and Bauhaus 100

On November 1st the SCAA was invited to a private tour through the expansive house of Max Bill (1908-1994), the home of his second and last wife Dr. Angela Thomas and her husband, film director Erich Schmid.

Up in Zumikon in 1967-68, Bill created a complex building on a slope with large garden terraces facing the forest. Each of the 36 rooms is unique and has been filled with little stories. Visiting the building feels like a treasure hunt on more than 1200 m². Especially architects tend to get lost when visiting Haus Bill for the first time. There are various split levels, floors allow infinite circulation and rooms follow a secret choreography. But the whole conglomerate has a simple underlying logic: It is forming a geometrical square composed by the two legs of an L-shape and the oldest tree in the surrounding forest. Inside, a practical industrial clinker tile floor is omnipresent and has a natural earth color that reflects a warm glow on people’s faces in daylight. The SCAA was only visiting on an evening tour but Angela and Erich enchanted the audience with their own glow.

Angela literally took her guests on a tour through space and time and had enlightening anecdotes to tell in each room. It seemed like every corner of the house had little treasures to reveal, be it an artwork by Hans Arp in the kitchen or a granite sculpture by Bill in the bedroom. Various paintings on the walls speak about the time when Max Bill was principal of the Ulm School of Design in Germany after the Second World War. They recall the friendships with important characters of the Bauhaus era and significant artists, like Josef Albers, Donald Judd, Fritz Glarner. One of Max Bill‘s offices was only for telephoning purposes. It is topped by an 18.7 m long composition by Keith Haring that Bill bought just one year before his death.

The grand living room lies one level lower than the entrance. The cosy Corbusier seating group at the fireplace, the large Saarinen table and the modern Prouvé recliner can be moved aside to make space for up to 110 people on occasions.

Moving another floor down, you find the painting room – the only one with wooden flooring. It is oriented Northwards to provide best lighting for the painter Max Bill. Nowadays a marble sculpture, made from the same sort of marble Michelangelo once used, hoovers on a pedestal on one side of the room. On the other side, an “infinite surface” metal sculpture pays homage to Bach‘s Mirror Fuges, a reminder of Bill‘s love for music.

In yet another room he lived his life as a graphic designer. It is filled with books, some of which Max Bill also edited. He even had a Kandinsky book translated into Chinese.

Being without a school degree or any finished academic diploma, Max Bill learned most of his architectural knowledge from Mart Stam‘s lectures on statics at the Bauhaus. Bill‘s first house was built in Höngg, Zürich in 1933. More than 30 years later, he built his second and last home with a village in mind. There are narrow alleys, grand spaces and surprises around the next corner. Constructive-wise he followed Bauhaus principles: simple, reduced, functional and rational. But he also followed his personal credo: that beauty had a function of its own. Thus he created the most beautiful living and working space for whoever would come to live and visit Haus Bill.

Haus Bill
To coincide with the Centenary – 100 years of Bauhaus, SCAA is proud to organise a private guided tour by Dr Angela Thomas Schmid in Haus Bill, designed by Max Bill. The residential home and artist’s studio was built in 1967. Today, it is home not only to Angela Thomas Schmid but also the Max Bill Georges Vantongerloo Foundation. The classic Bill structure has been preserved in its original condition and geothermal energy and solar electricity systems have recently been installed.
Max Bill
Max Bill was a great Swiss polymath: an artist, architect, industrial designer, graphic designer, and teacher. He attended the Bauhaus where he was taught by Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Oskar Schlemmer. Bill remained closely associated with the Bauhaus school and was a key figure in developing and propagating its principles, especially through his professorship at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich and as a founder of the Ulm School of Design. Through his pursuit of a new visual language that could be understood by the senses alone, Bill defined the conventions of Swiss design for decades to come. His influence spread even as far as South America, where he was a catalyst for the Concrete Art movement.

With a population of 80 Million people the Greater Bay Area is becoming the most important economic growth engine for the whole of China. The fast growing urbanization process challenges the existing working strategy and looks for a balanced development model. The speed of the urbanization asks for a systematical method of building fast with efficiency and quality. Zhu took „Meili Primary School“ in Shenzhen as an example. Due to the gap between the demand for education and lack of offerings, the Meili Primary School needed an extension. But it was difficult to work on the extension while all the pupils still needed to go to school, so the team of Jingxiang Zhu suggested a temporary school on a temporary site. With a light steel building with 90% reusable components, the cost of the project reduced greatly. With super standard components, the building time of the school could be maintained in a realistic range. After the extension finished, the temporary components could be used in many other similar situations in the Greater Bay Area.

Planning according to different marginal conditions, like structure, energy, construction process and program, are Zhu’s several criteria. In Kenya, the project „Mcedo Beijing School“ shows us how „construction process“ could intervene in the final design. „Mcedo Beijing School“ is located in a 5000 people residential slum area where building materials and working power are extremely unavailable. So the strategy was to design according to the logistic and transportation conditions. The building components were designed very light and easy to build, so the volunteers living nearby could be easily trained and help to build the school. Due to the carefully optimized workflow, it took 5 days to finish the 500 m2 school. The results are satisfying, and it shows a new way to achieve decent building environments in less developed areas.

Patrick Schwalm introduced several projects to us, like apartment „Swisswoodhouse“ in Nebikon and Möriken. The prefabricated modular design (about 45 minutes to fix each module) allows the building to be assembled in a very fast and efficient way. Another project located in Freilager, Zürich was finished on time with only 10 workers on the construction site and financially very competitive. The project also shows the potential and capability of timber construction for large scale projects.

In the panel discussion the two guests and vice president of SCAA, Tao Wang shared their opinions on the role of architects in the prefabrication design process and the differences between China and Switzerland. For Patrick Schwalm the market recognition on timber buildings is a main problem in Switzerland. For the practices of Jingxiang Zhu, unlike in Switzerland, the strong supporting system of building industry does not exist in China. He finds it a good chance to invent, research and create. Facing different challenges and difficulties on different sides of the world, all agree on a better and sustainable living and working environment with integrated prefabrication systems.

Paysages Partagés

SCAA started the summer season with an event at the atelier of artist Luo Mingjun in Biel, Switzerland‘s largest bilingual city. Three guests were invited to spark an open discussion on the topic of “Paysages Partagés – Shared Landscapes”.

Having lived in Switzerland for more than 30 years, Luo had worked and grown between Swiss and Chinese landscapes. She chose the theme of “Cliché” to engage with the idea of Shared Landscapes. It was impossible for her to find a single-worded translation of this French term to Chinese but she found that “misunderstanding” was an underlying facet of it. Encouraged to apply language as a working art, she dived into the “Dictionary of Received Ideas” by French novelist Gustave Flaubert. She used, changed, personalized this piece of literature and brought it back to life by creating a new interactive landscape: She encouraged the audience to participate in her new art piece by letting them pick words of the dictionary and create new cliché-driven definitions that she would continue to work with. Through this kind of “translation” Luo processes her feeling of losing language since living in a country so far from her birthplace.

Li Wei presented a small exhibition within Luo‘s atelier space. A little market stand displayed some unusual objects: the world-famous golden Lindt rabbits and yellow-furred dead chicklets. At first sight they looked like the ephemeral presents you can buy, chocolate from Switzerland and a fragile animal to care for (which Chinese parents use to give their children). But with his very unique understanding of a “Present”, Li had changed these objects. They were made of durable silicone, bound to last forever. When China opened up to Western goods, one of the most celebrated things at Li‘s school had been colourfully packed presents. It was all about the wrapping and gesture but not about the content of the gifts. Quiet and introverted as Li was, he had always appeared weird to his fellow schoolmates and had never received such a fancy present; until the day that a school-mate needed help in drawing and Li offered him the trade against a present. By turning the present into a demand, he finally became part of the social landscape through this business exchange. Li finds there is no chance to escape from a social context and therefore added an eternal flavour to his exhibition.

Art historian Marina Porovic analysed the differences between the biographies and artworks of Luo Minjun and Li Wei but she also saw a similarity in how both deconstructed meanings of objects (like a dictionary or chocolate rabbit). Both worked with a feeling of social and cultural dislocation but still offered a space to share and join in. For Croatian-born Marina the common denominator of the two artists and herself was “Identity”. She found that there was an affinity in playing roles in different contexts and in the acceptance of differences.

The SCAA event itself was a paradigm of a Shared Landscape. The audience did not have a mutual mother language. Natives from Chinese-speaking (8), German-speaking (8) and French-speaking (2) areas, from Croatia (1) and even outer space (1) had decided to come together in spite of the compromise to miss a lot of information just through language differences. Still every participant joined the discussions and activities and thus took part in setting the path to new horizons.
